The Polish digital minister Dariusz Standerski has asked the Commission to investigate TikTok under the Digial Services Act (DSA) over the spread of AI-generated disinformation videos.

Poland has recently seen a surge of AI videos that call for the country to leave the EU, the minister said in a post on X on Tuesday, which also displayed the letter, sent Monday. He said that the scale of spread of these videos suggests it is a coordinated campaign.

In the letter addressed to Tech Commissioner Henna Virkkunen, Standerski argues that TikTok failed to meet its obligations under the DSA to tackle such content. He urges the Commission to launch an investigation, saying that the content “poses a threat to public order, information security, and the integrity of democratic processes in Poland and across the European Union.”

The DSA mandates that online platforms must mitigate risks of illegal content or disinformation spreading online, including AI-generated fakes that pose a threat to democratic processes.

For Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs), such as TikTok, the Commission is responsible for the enforcement of the DSA. In December 2024, it already started formal proceedings against the video-sharing giant for failing to tackle risks to democratic processes during the Romanian elections.

A Commission spokesperson confirmed receipt of the letter, saying that the EU executive was in touch with Polish authorities about the matter and was continuing to monitor TikTok’s DSA compliance.

TikTok did not respond to a request to comment by time of publication.
